Website Hosting Explained

What is web hosting? Web Hosts are companies that provide space on a server that is owned or leased for use by their clients. They also provide internet connectivity which is usually done via a data center. The scope of web hosting is vastly different depending on the needs of the project/client. The most basic would be web page and small scale file hosting, where files can be uploaded via File Transfer Protocol (FTP), or a web interface (Web Shop Manager is an example of this). This is usually sufficient for a personal web page set up, but for a more complex site, a more dynamic package is needed. These complex packages typically provide database support and development programs that allow clients to install applications like content management, or Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) if the site is eCommerce.

When does hosting start? Typically, you will have to start paying for web hosting as soon as your domain name is being hosted (which means it is being displayed on the web). Until your hosting starts, browsers will not find your website. Sometimes web hosting providers will offer a certain amount of "free hosting" while the sites are still in development, and payment will begin after that period.

Email Hosting

Why do emails need to be hosted? It is typically a good idea to set up email accounts to be hosted on a server so that all of the company's business related emails can be archived. Email has become much more prevalent in business nowadays, and archiving emails is similar to keeping detailed records of transactions and business interactions.

What is DNS?

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a naming system for computers, services, or any resource connected to the Internet or a private network. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participating computers or services. A Domain Name Service translates searches for these names into IP addresses for the purpose of locating computer services and devices worldwide. By providing a worldwide, distributed keyword-based redirection service, the Domain Name System is an essential part of the functionality of the Internet.
